Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU on the general elections in Bolivia
The European Union congratulates President Evo Morales on his re-election, as well as the Bolivian people on their very high turnout on election day on 6 December and their renewed trust in democratic mechanisms as the means for pursuing the process of change.
The European Union reiterates its willingness to support the reforms for the benefit of the entire country embarked upon during President Morales' first term of office, and hopes to strengthen links of cooperation and mutual understanding in the coming period.
With a view to implementation of the State's political constitution promulgated in February 2009, the European Union calls on the political players to engage in constructive dialogue to ensure the unity of the country and to consolidate the institutions of the judiciary and the constitutional authorities.
The European Union would particularly like to express its special gratitude to the National Electoral Court, whose work has been decisive in ensuring that the elections proceeded properly. The European Union has paid particularly close attention to the quality of the electoral process through its Election Observation Mission on the spot.
