Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the political situation of Niger
The European Union is gravely concerned at recent political developments in Niger. The decision taken by Niger’s President to invoke Article 53 of the Constitution and the dissolution of the Constitutional Court without Parliamentary control is a setback for Niger's democracy.
The European Union calls on the Niger authorities to act responsibly and not to undermine their country's democratic achievements. The European Union is highly committed to the maintenance of stability in Niger and to respect for democratic values and the rule of law, which are an essential feature of the Cotonou Agreement.
The European Union calls on all political players to engage in dialogue and to resolve the current political crisis in a peaceful manner.
The European Union welcomes the efforts made by the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ensure a democratic outcome in Niger.
