Norge har sluttet seg til en EU-erklæring som uttrykker beymring for utviklingen av den politiske situasjonen i Niger. Oppløsningen av grunnlovsdomstolen og mangel på parlamentarisk kontroll blir sett på som et tilbakeskritt for demokratiet i landet.
Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the situation in Niger
The European Union expresses its deep concern regarding the political situation in Niger. The constitutional referendum planned for 4 August is against the ruling of the Constitutional Court
. The European Union reiterates that the dissolution of the Constitutional Court and the exercise of government powers without parliamentary control are grave violations of core democratic values and the principles of the rule of law. The European Union regrets that the current government of Niger has so far shown no inclination to return to democratic and constitutional proceedings.
The European Union emphasises that continuous violation of essential elements of the Cotonou Agreement will have serious consequences for cooperation between the EU and Niger. The European Union urges the Niger authorities to return to democratic and constitutional proceedings without further delay.
